Keratin Treatment Aftercare: 6 Tips & Products that will Extend the Life of Your Keratin Treatment

The truth is harsh, but there’s no point in sugar-coating:

Diamonds are forever. Keratin treatments aren’t.

It doesn’t matter if you go for a professional, at-home, or an express keratin blowout. There’s only so much your keratin touch-up will last.

So if you want to get the most bang from your keratin buck, give your kera-hair some proper aftercare.

Luckily, extending the life of your treatment is easier than you might think.

Let’s jump right into it.

Right after the keratin treatment: the dos & don’ts

Tip 1: When to wash your hair after a keratin treatment

Keratin needs to settle into your hair cuticle well, so don’t wash it off right after the treatment. Give it time to do its kera-magic.

How long? It depends on the treatment type:

  • After salon professional keratin treatment: 72 hours
  • After an express keratin blowout: You can wash your hair the same day. But unless really necessary, give it at least 24 hours before the first wash.

Tip 2: No kinking

Twisting and twirling your hair right after your keratin treatment will leave… a lasting impression—quite literally.

So for a few days after your kera-session, stay clear from any:

  • Hair clips
  • Braids
  • Up-dos using bands or clips
  • No ponytails or scrunchies, either.

Also, keep your mane loose when going to bed.

And speaking of zzz:

Tip 3: Use a silk pillowcase

Sounds strange? There’s actually a “scientific reason” behind swapping cotton with silk.

Silk is a much smoother fiber. Your hair will be exposed to less friction when your mane rests on a silk pillowcase. Less friction means less damage & frizz for your hair.

Tip 4:  Use a shower cap & wash your hair as seldom as possible

The general rule is: the less often you wash your hair, the longer the keratin will keep it smooth and frizz-free

In other words, you should become besties with your shower cap. Use it any time you need to jump in for a quick shower but don’t need to wash your hair. Your Keratin treatment will last much longer.

Keep your hair dry during the other parts of the day. Which ones, you might think?

After you’ve hit the gym, gorgeous.

Your hair might feel dry, but if you broke out a sweat on the rest of the body, there’s a high chance your scalp got sweaty, too.

So as a pro tip, make sure you blow-dry your hair after working out.

Tip 5: Pick a salt- sulfate-free shampoo & conditioner

Sulfates and salt in shampoos will deplete the keratin from your hair. That’s why it’s important to use a sodium chloride-free shampoo in your post-keratin hair routine.

Tip 6: Bring back the balance between protein & moisture

After a keratin treatment, your hair will be packed with protein, but its moisture level will be dramatically reduced. It’s time to balance that out.

First, apply a good leave-in conditioner every time before you style your hair. It will help nourish, repair, and protect the hair strands from heat.

Second, apply a deep treatment hair mask once a week. Your go-to mask should contain a healthy dose of plant protein, amino acids, and keratin to re-hydrate and nourish your hair in between your keratin touch-ups.
